Summer brings an increase in water usage by as much as 25%. And this comes at a time when conserving water should be a high priority for homeowners.
Let’s admit it: we’ll all use maybe a little more water in the summer than we should. But there are some ways you can avoid wasting water – and money – on your monthly bill!
Watering Your Lawn & Petunias
The competition for “Yard of the Month” is fierce, sure! So why not make the most of your watering regimen? The best times to water your lawn or garden is in the evening or the morning hours. This will limit the amount of water lost to midday evaporation when the sun is at its hottest.
Summer Precautions
If you’re planning family excursion for a couple of weeks, make sure you lower the temperature on your water heater.
Put a timer on your sprinkler system – or better yet, ask a neighbor to water your grass and flowers while you’re out of town. That way, your sprinklers aren’t running in the middle of a rainstorm!
If your washer vibrates on the spin cycle, it could eventually reposition itself. In the shift, make sure your machine is a few inches away from the wall so the water hoses don’t bend, causing them to break sooner. It’s also a good idea to replace your washing machine hoses every three years.
When It Rains, It Pours…Sometimes
Sewer line backups are a call we get a lot this time of year because of the increase in rainfall. Keep an eye out for drains that are suddenly clogged. Long periods without rain, followed by a deluge are also a problem because of shifting ground, creating broken pipes. Know where your home’s water shut-off valve is, shut the water off, THEN call Ensor!
